Do I need to enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?

It depends on your situation. If you’re still covered by a qualifying employer health plan, you may be able to delay certain parts of Medicare without penalties.

Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with coverage through a private insurance company, while Medicare Supplement works alongside Original Medicare to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs.

With Original Medicare, you can generally see any provider who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans may have provider networks, so it’s important to verify that your preferred doctors participate.

Review your Medicare coverage at least once a year, as premiums, benefits, provider networks, and prescription drug coverage can change. You should also review your plan whenever your healthcare needs or medications change.

If you have employer-sponsored health coverage, you may not need to enroll in every part of Medicare immediately. Your employer’s size and coverage determine when enrollment is appropriate and whether you can delay certain parts without penalties.
