What Is Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Original Medicare.
Instead of receiving your Medicare benefits directly through the federal government, you receive them through a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare.
Every Medicare Advantage plan must provide at least the same level of coverage as Original Medicare (Parts A and B), although many plans include additional benefits.
What Does Medicare Advantage Cover?
Every Medicare Advantage plan includes:
Medicare Part B
Medical coverage.
Prescription Drug Coverage
Integrated Medicare Part D benefits.
Vision Benefits
Routine eye exams and allowances for glasses or contacts.
Hearing Benefits
Hearing exams and hearing aid allowances may be included.

Things to Consider
While Medicare Advantage offers many advantages, it’s important to understand the trade-offs.
Some plans may have:
- Provider networks
- Referral requirements
- Prior authorization for certain services
- Different prescription formularies
- County-specific availability
That’s why comparing plans carefully is so important before enrolling.
Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare
| Medicare Advantage | Original Medicare |
|---|---|
| Private insurance company administers benefits | Federal government administers benefits |
| Often includes prescription drug coverage | Prescription drug coverage purchased separately |
| May include dental, vision, and hearing | Generally does not include routine dental, vision, or hearing |
| Annual out-of-pocket maximum | No annual out-of-pocket maximum |
| Provider network may apply | Broad nationwide provider access |
Neither option is inherently better.
The best choice depends on your individual healthcare needs and retirement goals.
