What Is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period?
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the time each year when eligible Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their Medicare coverage for the upcoming year.
For most beneficiaries, AEP runs:
October 15 through December 7
Any approved changes generally become effective on January 1 of the following year.
This enrollment period allows you to review your coverage and make adjustments if your healthcare needs, medications, providers, or plan benefits have changed.

Why Review Your Medicare Plan Every Year?
Many people assume they should simply keep the same Medicare plan year after year.
However, Medicare plans can change annually.
Changes may include:
- Monthly premiums
- Prescription drug formularies
- Provider networks
- Pharmacy networks
- Deductibles
- Copayments
- Coinsurance
- Supplemental benefits
Even if your health hasn’t changed, your current plan may no longer be the best fit.
An annual Medicare review helps ensure your coverage continues to meet your needs.
Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare During AEP
The Annual Enrollment Period is often when beneficiaries reconsider whether they should remain enrolled in Medicare Advantage or return to Original Medicare.
An independent Medicare review can help answer these questions objectively.
Should Everyone Change Plans During AEP?
Not necessarily.
If your current Medicare coverage continues to meet your healthcare needs, includes your providers and prescriptions, and remains cost-effective, keeping your existing plan may be the right choice.
The key is to review your options before deciding rather than automatically renewing your current coverage.
